Never Too Old, Never Too Tired: Running God’s Race Like Caleb

Numbers 14

Caleb in the Old Testament stands as a powerful example of a life that remains steadfast with God across the span of many years. We first encounter Caleb in the book of Numbers, when he was about forty to forty-five years old. As one of the twelve spies sent by Moses to scout the Promised Land, Caleb distinguished himself by his unwavering faith. While the other spies were overcome with fear at what they saw, Caleb, together with Joshua, believed that God would surely deliver the land

into their hands.  His confidence was not in human strength, but in God’s promise.

Despite his faithfulness, Caleb had to endure forty years of wandering in the wilderness—not because of his own failure, but because of the unbelief of the people around him. This long season of waiting could have bred frustration, disappointment, or even bitterness. Yet Scripture gives no indication that Caleb wavered. Instead, he remained faithful, walking quietly and consistently with God through years that may have seemed unproductive or delayed. His life reminds us that obedience is not always immediately rewarded, and that faith often requires perseverance in

seasons where nothing appears to be happening.

When Caleb appears again in the book of Joshua, he is eighty-five years old. Remarkably, his spirit had not dimmed. He declared that he was still as strong as when he was first sent out and boldly asked for the hill country that God had promised him. At an age when many would seek rest, Caleb was ready to take on new challenges. His request was not for comfort, but for conquest—for the fulfillment of God’s promise in his life. This moment reveals that Caleb did not merely start well; he finished well, maintaining his passion, strength, and faith into old age.

Caleb’s life offers a profound parallel for us today. In our younger years, we may find it easier to step out in bold faith, full of vision and courage. However, as time passes and life presents its challenges, delays, and disappointments, it becomes more difficult to sustain that same level of trust and zeal. Like Caleb, we may go through “wilderness seasons”—times when progress seems stalled, when promises appear distant, or when circumstances beyond our control hold us back. Yet these are precisely the seasons where our faith is refined and proven.

For those in mid-life, Caleb’s example speaks of quiet endurance. Much of his life was not marked by visible achievement, but by steadfast faithfulness. He did not allow the failures of others to derail his walk with God. In the same way, we are called to remain faithful regardless of the circumstances around us, trusting that God sees and honours our perseverance.

For those in later years, Caleb’s story carries an especially powerful message: it is never too late to pursue God’s purposes. Age does not diminish calling. In fact, Caleb’s greatest moment came at eighty-five, when he stepped into the very promise he had believed in decades earlier. While the world often equates aging with slowing

down or stepping aside, Caleb demonstrates that spiritual vitality and purpose do not retire. There is still ground to take, still mountains to climb, and still a legacy to leave.

What set Caleb apart was what Scripture calls a “different spirit.” He followed God wholeheartedly. This wholehearted devotion was not a one-time act, but a lifelong posture. It sustained him in moments of bold action, in long seasons of waiting, and in his final years of fulfillment. His life reminds us that God is not looking for perfection, but for hearts that are fully committed to Him over the long journey.

Ultimately, Caleb’s story is a call to each of us. Whether we are young, in the middle years, or advanced in age, we are invited to walk with God with the same wholehearted faith. We are encouraged to trust Him in seasons of action and in seasons of waiting, to hold onto His promises even when fulfillment seems far off, and to believe that our best years of spiritual impact may still lie ahead.

Like Caleb, may we have the courage to say at every stage of life, “Lord, give me my mountain,” trusting that the God who calls us is faithful to sustain us—and to bring His promises to pass in His perfect time.

Caleb’s life ultimately challenges the way we view age, purpose, and calling. The world may say there comes a time to slow down, step aside, and retire, but the kingdom of God operates differently. As long as we have breath, we have purpose. Like Caleb, we are called not to diminish with age, but to deepen in faith, strength, and usefulness to God.

Let us never say, “I am too old” or “My time is over” or “I am too tired” to do God’s work. Instead, may our prayer continually be, “Lord, let me be Your instrument on this earth. Yet even as we offer ourselves fully to Him, we are reminded to steward our bodies well—maintaining our health and building the stamina needed to run the race He has set before us. For to be God’s instrument requires not only a willing heart, but also a prepared vessel—one that is strengthened, disciplined, and ready for His use in every season.
